Responsible handling of sustainability and CO2 footprint

In recent years, there has been much discussion about how the university should behave in order to reduce our CO2 footprint. Of course, it is never wrong to deal with these cycles and sustainability issues more consciously and efficiently, but unrealistic plans to become a completely CO2-neutral campus sometimes cost us more freedoms and resources that we can cash in on in alternative ways.

About half of the CO2 emissions at universities are currently caused by transport and mobilization of students, while traveling is unavoidable and cannot always meet the wishes of others. In addition, the EUR is already quite active in sustainability. For example, waste is separated, energy is generated from solar panels, a smoking ban is enforced and meat replacement products are being considered. It is therefore unnecessary to increasingly restrict individual freedoms that will have a negligible effect. Liberi Erasmi is therefore in favor of

Liberi Erasmi wants:

  • Maintaining conscious and efficient forms of sustainability, unless it comes at the expense of individual freedoms such as eliminating options to travel how you want, or eat what you love.
  • An investigation into alternative options that restrict individual freedom as little as possible, such as introducing financial incentives to make food with a low CO2 footprint cheaper than usual (and not other food more expensive).
  • Weigh the future plans of the university and the stakeholders involved regarding sustainability and carbon footprint against the relative costs of quality education. limits that will have a negligible effect. Liberi Erasmi is therefore in favor
  • More water points (with eco-friendly cups if needed) so that unnecessary plastic bottles no longer need to be sold. Maintaining a nice and clean
  • campus. The placement and maintenance of trees and planters etc. is encouraged
