Attention to the mental health of students

The mental well-being of students is currently not good. The target group of 18-30 years old experiences the most stress, anxiety complaints and fatigue due to, among other things, increasing forms of individualization, higher expectations and also due to the previously taken

Covid measures. For example, lockdowns and online education have functioned as a catalyst for the development of more and longer study delays, deteriorating home situations and financial problems. Even outside the covid situation, a negative trend has already developed regarding the mental health of students. It is therefore very important for them to be mentally and physically fit in order to prevent these problems. Unfortunately, we see that the government does not take responsibility to take our mental well-being seriously and to help students with the problems that they have partly caused. From the university we therefore want to set up a Mental Health office that deals with the following points:

A mental health office that realizes the following:

  • Collaborate with organizations that can advise the university with regulations on how to prevent as much mental damage as possible, and can also offer targeted help to students to improve their well-being. Think of organizations that have previously spoken out about student well-being, such as MIND National Platform for Mental Health, Youth Care Netherlands, Knowledge Center for Youth Psychiatry, Dutch Association of Pedagogues and Education Experts and dozens of other organizations.
  • Organizing activities and events that will promote the mental health of students.
  • Developing a community app, in which the mental well-being of students can be voluntarily monitored, and personal feedback can be received on how to best deal with their personal situation
  • More research into the needs of students regarding student well-being, and based on that develop a long-term strategy to have options for possible future covid measures, and also outside of covid, to counter the mental damage among students.
  • More knowledge dissemination through Erasmus channels, or through lectures to deal with your (mental) health as responsibly as possible.
  • Tutors and teachers can be given the responsibility to disseminate information about this in their classes and meetings when the situation matters (such as in times of lockdowns or elsewhere) to alert students to their patterns that are affecting their mental well-being.
  • Better visibility and accessibility of student psychologists where students can go.
