Codetermination culture and decentralization

Good representation of participation bodies is a key element to be a university that can offer something to every student. When every student is represented, students will not feel excluded and will also feel that something can be done about their problems. However, there is room for improvement regarding the tasks and powers of elected student representatives and the participation culture. Based on the problems that students encounter and recommendations from research reports of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, Liberi Erasmi wants to achieve the following:
  • Open elections for all participation positions at the university. The current danger is that students hold positions and are granted rights that concern fellow students without being elected for them. This mainly occurs with positions from the education committee.
  • Representation of the constituency is a challenge. There is often little enthusiasm for participation, both to nominate candidates and to vote in elections. The average annual turnout for the University
  • Council is around 10%. Better promotion of the participation elections from the university is therefore desirable. This means that there must be better information about the participation bodies, and better promotion of the elections in multiple places at the university. masters, as well as better subject-specific cooperation from EUR with other universities that is required for this.
  • More Erasmus channels should pay attention to the student elections, and more space should also be given to student parties to make fellow students aware of the elections. Lecturers and tutors can also play a role in this to make students aware of their right to vote and participate. A short reminder in class would already have an effect.
  • Debates from Erasmus studio to promote visibility of elections, and that students also know better what they are voting for. Investigate whether a reward system can be linked to casting your vote.

Better preparations and induction periods for students with a management position

  • Ensure a good transfer by means of early function information for the term of office and accompanying induction processes during the first phase of the term of office. Members of education committees and student members are often less well informed about their legal tasks and powers. Good information and induction periods are therefore crucial, certainly because of the relatively short terms of office of students.
  • Statutes and co-determination regulations must be drawn up by the various co-determination bodies in order to have a clear picture of what each body stands for, and what the rights and obligations are of student representatives within these co-determination bodies.

More efficient forms of management culture in and between the participation bodies

  • Better coordination and cooperation between the different levels of participation, such as the University Council, the Faculty Councils and the education committees. There is currently hardly any contact between the different participation bodies, and often the different bodies are also not aware of the problems that occur at each other's level. Better contact between all student representatives is therefore essential for a better management culture, and in reaching agreements for e.g. education and examination regulations.
  • Better representation of students from all programmes. It is therefore undesirable that there is an overrepresentation from one programme within a faculty council.
  • Expansion of tasks and powers of elected student representatives and the participation bodies. Consider that the student representatives have the same resources as the teachers and staff to be able to perform their tasks optimally.
  • Working with clearly visible portfolios for faculties, services and domains; each member then has a number of areas of focus, making it easier for members of other participation bodies to know who they can contact with questions and comments.
  • Clearer demarcation of roles, so that members of the works council better understand their powers and act accordingly.
  • To promote the relationship between directors and co-determination by, among other things, holding more informal meetings in which all kinds of students and student associations can be involved.
Greater visibility of student representatives so students can contact them sooner for their input

Student recognition

Recognition from the university when choosing a board year at a study association or a student party. A recognized certificate from the university will give students recognition for the personal and financial investments they make

Decentralization

  • Students will be given the right to vote on important decisions taken by EUR for university policy. Polls show that this is not done sufficiently, which means that decisions can be taken against their interests.
  • Students/participation bodies will have a say in who will be/remain the new (vice) rector. We are in favor of a democratically elected rector, and chair of the CvB by students with a fixed term of office. A rector should be there for the students, which is why the best candidate should not be chosen in a closed circle without the opinion of students.
  • Members of the University Council are involved in application procedures for the recruitment of members of the Executive Board and Supervisory Board.
